GENERAL INFORMATION Prior to the installation of the siding, make sure to: Make your openings watertight in accordance with the type of air barrier you have chosen. Please refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. Although the wood you have received has been heat dried to less than 3 % humidity, it is possible to see a rise of humidity on the walls exposed to rain. This causes a normal expansion of the planks on both width and length. However, this movement is absorbed by the overlapping of the planks and the 45º cuts. Protect your investment: don't leave your siding needlessly exposed to bad weather as it may amplify the expansion of the wood. During the installation process of the siding, make sure to:
INSTALLATION 1) Storage Siding must be protected from bad weather. Use the protective tarp provided to cover the siding. If possible, store the siding inside. Lay down plastic sheeting on the ground and place the siding on 3 wood blocks to keep the wood away from the ground and spread the load evenly.
2) Lathing (Figure A and B) Mandatory for all siding profiles. An air space of 3/4" must be created by the lathing process. Lath dimension: 1 "X 3". Make sure you have good quality laths. Remove checking, knot holes as well as any decay. Spacing between laths:
3) Nails and nailing (vertical or horizontal) Use spiral shank stainless steel nails, 50 mm head, 16 gauge, compliant with the ACNOR B 111-1974 standard. According to the siding profile and dimensions, one or two nails must be used.
Follow these instructions carefully : Failure to comply with the installation guide voids the warranty. 8" Plank (Figure A) 6" Plank ( Figure B)
4) Spacing between planks (Figure C) Spacing is required. Do not tighten planks together. Follow the reference line to create the right plank spacing to allow moisture expansion. If there is no reference line, leave a space at the edge of the planks of a minimum of 1/8" for 6" siding and of 3/8" for 8" siding. [Click on figure to enlarge]
5) Joints (Figure D) Whenever a joint is required, cut planks to be jointed at a 45 ° angle. Joints must be aligned with laths. To avoid shrinkage and swelling on the length, insert 4’, 6’, 8’ and 10’ planks between 12’, 14’ and 16’ planks. Never install two 12 ', 14’ or 16 ' planks end to end. Protect cuts with a UV-resistant sealer. Apply caulk around the windows, doors and where siding planks meet mouldings. Caulk must be applied in contact areas to the surface of the siding.
6) Alignment A width variation of ±1/8" between the 6" planks is considered normal. Therefore, if a perfect horizontal alignment is required at the meeting point of two or more walls, you may have to plane the top edge of planks. [Click on figure to enlarge]
7) Mouldings Nail your mouldings using 75 mm nails. Insert 2 nails every 16”, one on each side of the moulding, between 3/4”
8) Important Notice Scratches and other minor damages occurring during installation will have to be sanded smooth by the installer. All cuts must be protected with a UV-resistant sealer. Failure to comply with the installation guide voids the warranty. |
